IG Metall, the German trade union, has rejected an engineering industry offer to raise wages by 2.5 per cent, raising the likelihood of industrial unrest.
The union is demanding a 6.5 per cent wage increase, and said yesterday it was determined to achieve its highest settlement for several years, even if this involved strikes. Under the industry's current wage agreement a ban on industrial action expires on April 28, after which the union is expected to mount short "warning strikes" unless a settlement is reached.
