German chancellor Angela Merkel drew on her experience as a former environment minister, and her own committed negotiating style, to craft Thursday’s deal on climate change, diplomats said. A senior aide said the chancellor was involved in the negotiations on a line-by-line basis, and was determined "not to let people off the hook".
Ms Merkel, environment minister when the Kyoto protocol was agreed, said political interest in climate change had increased sharply since then.
When Kyoto was signed it was very difficult to get leaders interested in global warming. The serious treatment given to the issue at the G8 proved this had changed, she said.
